Pep Guardiola implied he was joking when he commented that he would quit if Manchester City did not reduce their squad size but maintained they need to cut down their numbers.
“I was laughing when I said that,” he said at his press conference ahead of Sunday’s game against Fulham, which will decide City’s Champions League fate.
“The expression is the same. I don’t want to have players at home with their families when it’s time to play.
“Everyone needs to have a chance to play and compete with each other, for the best of all of us. That is the most important thing.
“Of course there are injuries during the season. If it happens, the season will be a problem, but always we expect next season will be a little bit different, knowing that we have a lot of games and no rest in the summertime.
“But the last three weeks or a month, four, five, six players at home, and that is not healthy for any of us. For them, for the club, for me, for anyone. The club is completely with me.
“We are going to find the best way for all of us.”
Guardiola also offered support to Phil Foden, who has been left out of the England squad after saying he is suffering with physical and mental fatigue, in part due to an ankle problem.
